We have been informed that the Far North District Council is processing an application for a redevelopment of Hananui Lodge Motel opposite the Russell Town Hall. We understand the the FNDC planing department is currently assessing the application to determine how to proceed in terms of notification.
The proposal is for a 3 storey, 21 unit apartment complex which would double the current capacity and increase the size of the existing building considerably.
We are very concerned as to the impact of this substantial proposal on the character of Russell and will communicate to the Council our wish for full notification. We believe this building does not comply with existing planning provisions for the Russell Township Zone and in particular the Heritage Precinct. NZ Historic Places Trust has expressed its concern about the effects of the proposal on historic heritage. We have written to the Council and its Consultant Planer requesting full public notification and the Society to be considered an affected party. We are still waiting for a response to our request. It is now (July 08) a year ago since we wrote to the FNDC and have had no reply.
